Seventeen recipients receive St. Katherine Foundation Scholarship Award

Seventeen outstanding students of the St. Katherine Greek Orthodox Church of Redondo Beach, CA were awarded merit scholarships by the St. Katherine Foundation in May. It was a rewarding day to honor these young men and women who have excelled academically and have served their church and community with great dedication. The community, the families and the Foundation Board are proud of their accomplishments and grateful for the assistance given by the Basil P. Caloyeras Center for Modern Greek Studies at Loyola Marymount University of Los Angeles.

Peter Vasilion, Foundation President

The Foundation has contributed a total of $195,500 in scholarships since 2007. This remarkable amount is raised by the generosity of nine private endowments and the participation of the entire community in the Thanksgiving Benefit Drawing every November. The St. Katherine Foundation was started to establish an endowment to support the church’s long-term goals and missions that are beyond the normal scope of the St. Katherine community. The youth ministry is one of their top priorities. The success of the program has also inspired inquiries from Southern California churches as well.

This event is a highlight of the year but, sadly, this past year the Foundation lost two prominent charter board members who dedicated much to the church and the Foundation with their generosity and vision. Angelo Revels, former president and Chris W. Caras, former Vice president will be greatly missed by all for all that they offered with unwavering zeal and love for their church. May their memory be eternal.
